Marvel Zombies Disney Plus Series' First Details Shared At Comic-Con

At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel has shared new information about its upcoming series adaptation of the five-issue limited run of Marvel Zombie comics. Marvel Studios head of streaming, television, and animation Brad Winderbaum joined head of visual development Ryan Meinerding to discuss the series and also shared concept art.

The panelists promised that the show will not shy away from the gore and disgusting visuals that were proudly on display in the classic comic series. Spearheaded by storyboard artist Bryan Andrews (What If…?, Avengers: Endgame), the series will feature zombie versions of Hawkeye, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Wanda Maximoff, and Okoye. They’ll be facing off against Yelena Belova, Kate Bishop, Red Guardian, Jimmy Woo, Death Dealer, Shang-Chi, and Kamala Khan.

Or, as a brief synopsis released puts it: “The animated series Marvel Zombies from Marvel Studios reimagines the Marvel Universe as a new generation of heroes battle against an ever-spreading zombie scourge.” Andrews will direct Marvel Zombies, which will be written and executive produced by Zeb Wells (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Robot Chicken).

Zombie versions of Stephen Strange and Scarlet Witch appeared in Doctor Strange 2, a riff and reference to the Marvel zombies seen previously in the What If…? series–which both inspired and opened the door for this upcoming adaptation.

Marvel Zombies was among the Marvel shows announced during last November’s Disney+ Day. There’s no release date as of yet, but we did get release windows for I Am Groot, X-Men ’97, and Spider-Man: Freshman Year.

HBO's The Last Of Us Series Has 10 Episodes In Season 1

Filming on HBO’s The Last of Us TV series is currently underway in Canada, and now a few more details about the project have come to light from writer Craig Mazin. He revealed this on a Scriptnotes podcast, also confirming that season 1 has five different directors.

Mazin–who previously worked with HBO on the acclaimed Chernobyl mini-series–said the writing for the first three-to-four episodes is “kinda done” (via Collider).

The Last of Us received a straight-to-series order, which means HBO is not filming a pilot episode and is instead launching directly into the series. The same was true for Chernobyl, and Mazin acknowledged that this presents some potential issues, one being that the production team isn’t able to “retool” what they otherwise could have if it was a pilot.

HBO’s Game of Thrones famously filmed a disaster of a pilot episode that featured a different actress as Daenerys and other big changes. The Sons of Anarchy spin-off Mayans MC also re-shot its…

Kyle MacLachlan Joins Peacock Joe Exotic Series As Howard Baskin

Actor Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks, Portlandia) has joined the cast of Peacock’s upcoming Joe Exotic series, according to Variety. A premiere date has not yet been announced.

MacLachlan will star as Howard Baskin, opposite series lead Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), who will play Carole Baskin. The NBC series was first announced last year, on the heels of the runaway popularity of Netflix’s Tiger King–which is also likely widely remembered as one of the first things people binged while in quarantine. For those who haven’t yet seen it, Howard Baskin’s character functions as an “even-keeled husband who supports her” throughout an escalating war with the titular character, who will be played by James Cameron Mitchell (Shrill, The Good Fight).

All in all, the chemistry between these three actors alone should make the show worth a watch–even among those who didn’t watch or made a point to stay away from the Netflix series. Said Susan Rovern, chairman…
